What kind of beds do Bernedoodles like?
They’re not called man’s best friend for nothing. Dogs are innocent animals who want to please their owner and be part of your family. And Bernedoodles are no exception as they’re wonderful family dogs. As such, it’s natural for us as pet owners to want to make sure our puppies are well fed, get plenty of exercise and are comfortable. One of those comforts is your puppy’s bed. But what kind of beds do Bernedoodles like?
Bernedoodles, while a highly intelligent breed, can be very stubborn. Why do we mention that here? Because you can buy a bed for your Bernedoodle and find out they rarely use it. This is exactly the case for Cooper.
He has two beds. A soft, plush microfiber bed and a long foam bed. Both of which he uses rarely. It’s not like he doesn’t know they’re his, it’s just he prefers other spots to rest and nap.
Comfort and Cooling
In the summertime, Cooper loves to nap on the cool tile floor and even on the stone in front of the fireplace. In the winter, he likes to nap on the living room rug, but because of the Bernese Mountain Dog in him, he’ll still choose to sleep on the tile or the stone. Our sweet boy usually prefers to be cooler than warmer.
And what about at night? Well he’s a bit finicky. His plush, microfiber bed is in our bedroom, but he rarely choses to use it. If we leave the door open, he likes to sleep on the hardwood floor in the summertime. In the winter, he’ll sleep on the carpet in the bedroom. Before bed and in the mornings he will jump up onto the bed to snuggle up with us. But he rarely sleeps for the night on the bed, even though he’s welcome to.
On occasion he will sleep on his bed, but again, that happens only on rare occasions. It’s not that we didn’t try to get him to use his bed. As noted earlier, he knows that the beds are his. When we first bought the beds, we put them in a comfortable spot and put treats and some of his toys on the bed regularly for the first few weeks to let him know that it’s his. Now if we try to move his bed for whatever reason, he tries to take it back and put it back in its place. He’ll even perform an act of dominance (usually air humping) on the bed, to show that it’s his. This is not a sexual act, but again, one of dominance. So he knows the bed is his and he claims it as his own… he just doesn’t use it all that often.
One of the things we plan to try is getting him an elevated bed. Since Bernedoodles tend to prefer being cooler than warmer, the elevated bed allows air flow making the surface of the bed cooler than a microfiber or rug-like bed. These elevated beds are made of a soft, breathable trampoline-like material (although not as bouncy). If the elevated bed makes him even a little more comfortable, it will be worth the investment.
Chew-Proof
Other than comfort and cooling, what is another feature you should look for when you purchase a beg for your Bernedoodle? Chew-proof. A chew-proof bed will ensure that your Bernedoodle won’t destroy the bed if he or she is still in a chewing phase. It will also ensure that if your pup does chew the bed that there won’t be any material that your dog could ingest or choke on making it a safe bed option. This feature is a must for any dog bed you choose to get for your pup.
Another feature you may want to consider, although not essential, is a dog bed with an elevated perimeter (think of a nest-like bed). This type of bed allows your pup to snuggle up to the sides and/or rest their head on a soft, slightly elevated cushion. Cooper is a pillow hog, he would definitely like this kind of bed, except that he already is king of the castle and has access to pillows on the bed and on the couches.
Cave Beds
Your Bernedoodle may enjoy being cuddled up and as such some beds come with a built in “cave”, which is essentially a raised cover at the end of the bed that your pup can snuggle into. This type of bed isn’t ideal for Cooper since he tends to like being cooler and doesn’t really like things on top of him.
Human Beds
There’s no getting around it. When it’s time to shut off the lights and get a good night’s rest, there’s a high likelihood your furry companion will want to join you. Naturally, your pup wants to be with its master and the bed is a comfy, soft place for him or her to lay their head. We recommend a nice blanket to put on top of the bed to designate the spot where your pup will sleep throughout the night.
Conclusion
So what kind of beds do Bernedoodles like? In summary, the most important feature of a bed for your Bernedoodle is to ensure it’s chew proof to protect your dog from hazards and prevent you from needing to buy new beds regularly. The other important feature is comfort. This comes in the form of both ensuring your dog’s bed is soft and the right temperature. Having a nested bed may be a good idea if your dog uses their bed a lot and enjoys having something to rest his or her chin on. And finally, you may want to consider a bed with a cave if your pup likes to snuggle up under something.
Hopefully these tips will help you find the ideal bed for your Bernedoodle. Happy snoozing!
